I found that if you are selling a product to a general audience Facebook and other social sites can help you gain leads, but if your product is very specific to a particular industry that doesn’t apply to a general audience, social sites won’t work so well with gathering leads for you, unless it’s a social site on the topic of the specific industry.

With the new Google Plus due to be officially released soon, I probably won’t sign up for an account, as I know from Google’s many other business offerings (eg. like the droid phone, browser toolbars, and search engine), they like to track many other information about their users even when you are not using their site or products and just going about your normal daily life. They have cookies and scripts that track your daily internet travels and other information. In addition to that many or these automated link services pride themselves on having your site linked to or on getting back links from many directory or social sites that are unheard of and have very low page rank or no page rank at all, which means that your one backlink is almost worthless. Basically also meaning any seo competitors with less but better quality links will link higher than you all day everyday. Many of the automated backlink software or services out also didn’t keep up with their updates meaning that many directory and social bookmarking link sites would change their sign up forms and then the software or service wouldn’t be able to automate link your site to the directories or social sites rendering the software or service worthless once again. I would say using these services can be useful if you focus on linking to directory and social sites that have some page rank worth or are highly trafficked, but then in addition to a quality manual link building campaign. You probably can use these services for some of their automation features to save you time where possible, but don’t think it’s an end all be all, you should still be running a quality link building campaign in addition. One of the only services I would give credit to upon the worthless services that we’ve tried is Social Bookmarking Demon. And this is not a promotion and I am not an affiliate for them, notice there is not link to the product). They seemed to be the only half decent piece of automation software that we’ve seem to come across. They keep their updates on par, and the software seemed to work well and even though they only offer 100 bookmarking sites to link to, you can add your own quality list and the software seems to adapt to the forms.

Using an affiliate marketing program can be beneficial, don’t get me wrong, but it will take some work. You will come across some affiliates that sign up to your program and will not only not sell anything, but they won’t even sign into or keep up to date with the affiliate program. Then out of a few hundred affiliates you will get about a handful that will actually participate and sell something, we tend to call those “Super Affiliates.” A great way to try to engage the dead weight affiliates is through contest, gifts, and constant communication. Hence, the reason you may have seen or come across some affiliate programs on the web where they offer tv’s, iphones, or other electronics or gifts to affiliates that sell the most product. With all the effort in communicating and buying gifts to court affiliates, the marketing team could of used those efforts and resources more effectively for a better return on investment. I would say affiliate marketing is still a great marketing tactic, but it should only be used as an addition to a great marketing program, not the main source, because when the game gets tough in recessionary environments and it’s time to go hard or go home, affiliate marketing as main marketing source ain’t going to cut it, you’ll need guerrilla marketing tactics.
